Back-to-School Safety: Personal Injury Risks for Children

By Buss Law

As Wisconsin kids head back to school, safety should be top of mind for parents, educators, and drivers. The school season brings a spike in certain personal injury risks that can be prevented with a little awareness and preparation. Here are some of the most common risks—and how to avoid them.

1. Pedestrian Accidents

Children walking or biking to school are at increased risk of being hit by vehicles, especially during busy morning drop-offs.
Prevention Tip: Teach kids to use crosswalks, obey crossing guards, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing. Drivers should slow down in school zones and avoid distractions.

2. School Bus Injuries

While school buses are generally safe, injuries can occur while getting on or off, or from sudden stops inside the bus.
Prevention Tip: Instruct children to stand back from the curb and wait until the bus comes to a complete stop. Inside the bus, kids should remain seated and keep the aisle clear.

3. Playground Injuries

Falls from playground equipment are a common cause of fractures, sprains, and head injuries.
Prevention Tip: Check that your child’s school maintains equipment and surfaces properly. Reinforce safe play rules with younger children.

4. Sports and PE Injuries

Back-to-school means back to sports—and the risk of sprains, strains, and concussions.
Prevention Tip: Make sure kids use proper protective gear, warm up before physical activity, and report any pain or injuries to an adult.
